The final event of the West Coast Swing should be a treat, with all the top PGA Tour stars scheduled to compete, including the biggest star of all, Tiger Woods. The tournament tees off Thursday at Riviera Country Club outside Los Angeles. New world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIlroy and Jon Rahm are among the nine players in the world’s top 10 who are scheduled to compete. Scheffler seized the top ranking from McIlroy with his WM Phoenix Open victory, and Rahm also has his eye on the top spot. Woods is competing on the PGA Tour for the first time since last summer’s Open Championship at St. Andrews. Among the many other notable names in the Genesis Invitational 2023 field are Justin Thomas, Xander Schauffele and Collin Morikawa.
Rahm is the 7-1 favorite, just ahead of McIlroy (10-1) and Scheffler (10-1) in Caesars Sportsbook’s latest 2023 Genesis Invitational odds. Four other players are 20-1 or shorter — Schauffele (14-1), Justin Thomas (15-1), Tony Finau (18-1) and Max Homa (20-1). Woods is a major long shot at 120-1 in the Genesis Invitational 2023 field. One stunning prediction from McDonald: He is fading Viktor Hovland (25-1), even though the Norwegian has posted consecutive top-five finishes at Riviera. But his last top-10 finish in a full-field event came in November, and he tied for 42nd last week. Hovland’s most recent victory was in November 2021 and he hasn’t won a PGA Tour event in the United States. His performance around the green has been an ongoing issue. His play off the tee and on approach have propelled him the past two years in L.A., but his greenside game isn’t good enough for sustained success at Riviera.
On the other hand, the improvement around the green is what has put Rahm back on the brink of the world’s No. 1 ranking. He ranked 143rd in strokes gained around the green last season but is 13th so far in 2022-23. The Spaniard leads the tour in scoring average and strokes gained total, is second in greens in regulation and fourth in strokes gained total. That all-around dominance is why he has four victories in his past nine events and finished in the top 10 in all of them.
