Made for luxury sunset views, but never used.
Bill Gates has never stepped foot on his $644 million superyacht as he prepares to sell the environmentally friendly luxurious vessel to a former NHL goalie turned billionaire, according to a report.
The 390-foot ship, christened “Breakthrough,” was built by the Dutch shipbuilder Feadship in 2021 and launched three years later as the world’s first hydrogen-powered superyacht — and is equipped with amenities fit for a billionaire, including two large bedrooms, its own infinity pool, helipad, spa, and gym.

The eco-friendly superyacht runs on “green” energy, with its only emission being water, thanks to two 28-ton vacuum-sealed tanks that power the ship with liquid hydrogen.
While Feadship or Gates has never outright confirmed he commissioned the superyacht — also dubbed Project 821 — it has been widely reported that it belongs to the 13th richest person on the planet.
However, even with all the lavish amenities and revolutionary technology, the Microsoft co-founder is seemingly ready to part ways with the massive vessel, according to Luxury Launches.
Canadian billionaire and CEO of Green For Life Environmental Patrick Dovigi has been linked to buying the $645M superyacht, the outlet added.
The Edmonton Oilers selected the Ontario native when he turned 18, taking him as the 15th pick in the second round in the 1997 NHL draft.

After spending his career playing in the minor leagues, he eventually stepped away from the game and founded Green For Life Environmental Inc. in 2007.
His company has quickly become one of the most profitable and respected waste management firms in North America, with an estimated value of $18.62 billion as of April 2025, according to Market Watch.
Dovigi himself has an estimated net worth of $1 billion and is the 97th richest person in Canada.
Jamie Edmiston, CEO of Edmiston, one of the world’s leading superyacht brokerage and management companies, has said Breakthrough is a game changer for superyacht standards.

“The most extraordinary yacht ever built,” Edmiston said, according to Luxury Launches. “The one that will change it all.”
Along with luxurious bedrooms, there are numerous outdoor lounges, a giant spiral staircase, and a fantastic observation room at the front.
The superyacht also reaches a top speed of 17 knots (19.5 mph) and can cross the Atlantic.

Dovigi, however, is no stranger to owning a luxurious superyacht.
The billionaire purchased AHPO, a 377-foot, six-deck superyacht, from billionaire Michael Lee-Chin in 2023 for $362 million but is now parting with it after less than two years of ownership, according to Luxury Launches.
The superyacht hit the market in 2022 and features a two-story Owner’s apartment, IMAX theater, plunge pool, sauna, massage room, and beauty salon.
The vessel is currently listed for sale for $370 million by both Edmiston and Moran Yacht & Ship.

The Breakthrough was initially listed for sale soon after its launch in May 2024 for upwards of $600 million, according to The Sun.
As for Gates, if the sale does happen, it would be another monstrous business deal for the tech tycoon.
The Microsoft co-founder, who shares kids Jennifer, 28, Rory, 25, and Phoebe, 22, with ex-wife Melinda French Gates, is worth an eye-popping $101.2 billion, according to Forbes.
Gates recently said that his kids will only inherit 1% of his fortune — which still equates to upwards of $1 billion each.
“My kids got a great upbringing and education, but less than 1% of the total wealth because I decided it wouldn’t be a favor to them,” he said.
