Iga Swiatek , the world no.1 WTA icon, recently shared shocking news with her fans on Twitter. After her outstanding performance at the Indian Wells, she lost to Elena Rybakina in the finals. However, her fans were waiting for the Polish tennis star to make a strong comeback at the Miami Open and subsequently, the Billie Jean King Cup. Going by Swiatek’s recent revelation, her fans will have to hold their horses for some time before they witness her power strokes on the court again. Yes, Swiatek has announced her withdrawal from both these tournaments just a few minutes ago.
During the tournament in Doha, it seemed that the pressure and intensity of pro-tennis had taken a drastic toll on her body. In her statement posted on Twitter, Swiatek expressed disappointment at having to withdraw from the tournaments. However, she also made it clear that her health is the most important thing at the moment. She further explained that she is struggling with a strong infection since the Doha tournament and that a nasty cough has now led to a rib injury.

Despite her best efforts to continue playing, Swiatek revealed in a long statement that she is still feeling a lot of discomfort and pain. It is for the best that she is taking a break in order to recover. Thanking her medical team for their support, Swiatek humbly stated that she will keep her fans updated on her progress.
Swiatek’s announcement definitely comes as a shock to her fans around the world, who had been looking forward to seeing her compete in her best form, as she has been since the beginning of this season. Nonetheless, as Swiatek said in her statement, “that’s sports, it happens sometimes, without our control… Time to accept it and get well as soon as possible.”

Posting the long message in both English and Polish, Swiatek said, “It was a very difficult decision to make but I have no doubts that health is the most important.”
Her decision to prioritize her health over playing the big titles right now is probably a wise one. If anything, it is a testament to her far-sightedness and maturity. In an industry where fierce competition and injuries are all too common, it is refreshing to see a young athlete take a step back and put her well-being first.
