For most Major League Baseball fans, the last few days have been exciting. The New York Yankees beat the Cleveland Guardians and the Los Angeles Angels won against the St. Louis Cardinals. But among the most major headlines is perhaps that Bryce Harper is finally back. The Philadelphia Phillies were sorely missing their designated hitter while he recovered from Tommy John surgery. But Harper beat all odds and came back after just 160 days.
Rumors had been swirling about the 30-year-old’s return; at one point it was even announced that Harper was training at first base for a quicker return. It later turned out to be true and clearly helped in his swift recovery. As he made his comeback to the Phillies’ lineup on Tuesday, Harper went hitless against the LA Dodgers’ Julio Urias.
But it wasn’t this piece of information that left fans troubled and surprised.

As the Phillies’ DH moved down the field, the crowd noticed something odd on Harper’s left arm. It was a full metal elbow brace that he was choosing to play an MLB game in. As fans know, Tommy John surgery is a serious matter and requires a dedicated recovery time. According to medical experts, a brace is recommended for about a month’s time, after which a longer rehab period follows.
But Harper is already back in action, ready to play. During Wednesday’s game, the ballplayer was sliding into second base after his first hit and he visibly protected his arm as he made the move feet-first. Many a player has gotten this particular surgery since its invention in 1974. But it was perhaps the first time that a player made the active choice to appear with a brace at a game.

Baseball fans don’t know what to make of Harper’s latest move
It’s undeniable that Phillies fans missed their DH at the beginning of the season. Seeing him come back with one of the fastest recovery periods MLB has seen, some applauded Harper.
But it would also be safe to assume that most fans wanted Harper back in good condition. And playing in a brace is raising some serious concerns.
Some think the Phillies made decisions in a hurry and should have given more time to Harper for proper recovery.
One appreciated Harper’s desire to win but still thought it was a “crazy” move.
