Bronny James has had a less-than-fruitful freshman campaign at USC. As a freshman, he featured in 25 games for the Trojans, starting six of them. During this time, he averaged 4.8 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 2.1 assists per game, with shooting percentages of 36.6% from the field and 26.7% from beyond the arc. This squandered his chances to declare for the NBA draft in 2024, as those numbers would mean being potentially undrafted.
Now, a recent rumor threatens to derail or delay his chances of playing in the league even further. According to Peter Thamel’s post on X, “USC coach Andy Enfield has emerged as a person of interest in the SMU men’s basketball search, sources tell me and @jeffborzello. No deal is imminent. There’s multiple candidates, with Enfield expected to top the list. “

Enfield has helmed the Trojans as head coach for the past 11 seasons, debuting in the 2013-14 campaign. Under his leadership, the team has secured five NCAA Tournament berths, including three in the last four seasons. However, the 2023-24 season, coinciding with James’ freshman year at USC proved disappointing for Enfield and his team. With a lackluster 15-18 overall record, the Trojans ranked among the Pac-12 conference’s underperforming teams. Additionally, their conference play record stood at 8-12.

So, this news could be interpreted both ways for Bronny, who was hoping to start more games the next season.
How does the coaching change affect Bronny James?
The possibility of a new head coach for the Trojans in the 2024-25 season remains uncertain. Given the team’s disappointing performance in the 2023-24 campaign, a coaching change could potentially rejuvenate the program. In the process if Bronny decides to stay rather than declare for the draft he could reap the benefits of the refreshed coaching approach with the Trojans.

Arguably, James’ most noteworthy display in March occurred during a 13-point triumph against the University of Arizona on March 9. Despite playing approximately 19 minutes, he made significant contributions across the board, recording five points, six rebounds, one assist, two steals, and one block. He shot 2-of-3 from the field and 1-of-2 from beyond the arc. With a new head coach, these performances could become the norm for him. Cementing a spot for him on an NBA roster when he decides to declare.
