BIG RAPIDS – It was a tad windy and, one Big Rapids player called it “really hot,” on Thursday in the Cardinals’ tennis match with Alpena.
But it was a perfect day for the Cardinals with an 8-0 win over Alpena at the Big Rapids tennis courts.
All four singles and all four doubles flights for Big Rapids swept their opponents 2-0.
“It’s a beautiful day and it’s April,” Big Rapids coach Jeff Mossel said. “The girls all played pretty well and had a good time. It was a little windy and a little warm. We’ll probably like low 70s rather than 80s. Plus the wind had some effect today. There were some missed balls because of that.” Winning for the Cardinals in singles were Addison Mossel (No. 1) 6-2, 6-3; Kara Paquette (No. 2) 6-0, 6-3; Brenna Mossel (No. 3) 6-0, 6-0; and Reece Bollman (No. 4) 6-0, 6-1.
“It was good, it was fun,” Brenna Mossel said. “It was really hot. It would like it a little cooler.”
But as a team “we’re doing good,” she added.
Winning in doubles were Courtney Myers-Lauren Wilcox (No. 1) 6-3, 6-1; Aliyah Glents-Ava Schneider (No. 2) 6-0, 6-2; Emily Beemer-Ari Glentz (No. 3) 6-0, 6-0 and Rebecca Meyers-Kati Mcloed (No. 4) 6-1, 6-4.
The Cardinals are 2-0.
“I think I did pretty well, Paquette said. I was really consistent today. I want to keep working on my servces and my backhand.”
Big Rapids is at the Ludington tournament this weekend with Fremont, Muskegon Catholic Central, and the host school.
“We expect to meet some stiff competition from traditionally top teams in our area,” Jeff Mossel said. “We are encouraging the girls to play like underdogs with nothing to lose. “
