“I worked in construction to build a tennis Academy. After we finished, then they gave me a job. I was like a maintenance guy. I couldn’t pay for babysitting so I had to bring the kids to work. Believe it or not, the parents of other kids, they came to me they said, ‘Listen, your son is playing some serious tennis.’ My son’s name is Frances Tiafoe, Jr,” said Tiafoe’s father bout him. His words echoed how the American ATP star showed early signs of being a prodigy and now here we are! Yonex’s latest advertisement showcases Tiafoe as a player far from being ordinary. In an interview with The Old Man And The Three podcast, this 2018 Delray Beach Open champion said, “My dad helped build a tennis academy. Once the tennis academy was built, he became the head maintenance guy. My dad lived at the tennis center. So, with all those kind of things, it allowed me and my twin brother to be there for free.” Tiafoe’s words not only highlighted his struggle but shed light on his early days and his parents’ sacrifices that made him so successful today. “Honestly, it’s funny that we’ve been doing all these cause they were only doing that to get me to tennis center, to not be in our neighborhood after school and kind of just be in a good environment,” Tiafoe concluded. Although he said it jokingly, his statement highlighted how his parents’ decision not to leave him and his brother alone brought them closer to their dream.

It’s not foreign. You hear it and you’re like, ‘man that’s wild.’ And I was like, I got to get up and play tennis in the morning and I got lucky,” said Tiafoe. “When we stayed with my dad, he had his own room like in the corner offices and he’d be working through the night.
