OXNARD, Calif. — The progress of rookie corner Caelen Carson has prompted a trade.
The Cowboys traded 2021 third-round pick, cornerback Nahshon Wright, to Minnesota for cornerback Andrew Booth Jr., a former second-round pick, the teams announced.

Carson’s production in training camp and in Thursday’s scrimmage with the Los Angeles Rams, moved him up as the fourth corner behind Trevon Diggs, DaRon Bland and Jourdan Lewis. The fourth cornerback spot was something Wright was fighting for but inconsistency and Carson’s rise cleared some things at the position.

During Thursday’s practice, Wright allowed a touchdown to the Rams’ DeMarcus Robinson, which led to a brief chat with defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer. Carson picked off a Jimmy Garoppolo pass.

Before Friday’s practice, coach Mike McCarthy said the coaching staff was talking about moving Carson up the depth chart.

“Yeah definitely, those are conversations that we’re having,” McCarthy said. “He’s definitely making plays and he’s earned that right and I always go to this part too, special teams. So make sure there’s clear understanding [of] his role there.”
In three seasons, the 25-year old Wright played 32 games and had five pass breakups and one interception. He played mainly special teams during his time with the Cowboys. Last season he played in just 50 defensive snaps and 235 special teams plays.
Booth, 23, played in six games his rookie season before suffering a torn meniscus in 2022. He returned from the injury and participated in 17 games with one start. In 23 games for the Vikings, he had one pass breakup and 20 tackles.
