The Golden State Warriors are working out a former first-round pick as they look to bolster their roster ahead of the 2024-25 NBA season.
On Wednesday, ESPN’s Kendra Andrews reported the Warriors were working out multiple veterans, including forward Troy Brown Jr. The 25-year-old spent the 2023-24 season with the Minnesota Timberwolves and Detroit Pistons, and is now looking for a new home as training camp nears.

The news of Brown’s workout comes two days after it was reported the Warriors were working out veteran power forward Davis Bertans. The Warriors currently have two partial non-guarantee contracts available, and could take a chance on either of these players potentially turning into valuable contributors to this year’s team.

Brown was initially selected in the first round of the 2018 NBA Draft by the Washington Wizards. After two-and-a-half seasons in Washington, the University of Oregon product was traded to the Chicago Bulls. After a year-plus with the Bulls, Brown signed with the Los Angeles Lakers. He spent one year with the Lakers, before splitting the 2023-24 season with the Timberwolves and Pistons.
Brown has averaged 6.2 points, 3.6 rebounds, and 1.4 assists across 356 career NBA games. He’s a lifetime 42.3 percent shooter from the field, 35.1 percent shooter from deep, and 78.3 percent shooter from the free throw line.
The best season of Brown’s career came in 2019-20 with the Wizards, when he averaged 10.4 points, 5.6 rebounds, 2.6 assists, and 1.2 steals across 25.8 minutes per game. In his only other season averaging more than 20 minutes per game — the 2022-23 season with the Lakers — Brown averaged 7.1 points while shooting a career-high 38.1 percent from deep.

The Warriors will now give Brown an opportunity to work out with the team and potentially earn a contract. Brown is a 3-and-D wing who would be a perfect player to replace some of Klay Thompson’s minutes.
After losing Thompson, the Warriors made three major offseason additions, adding guards Buddy Hield and De’Anthony Melton and forward Kyle Anderson. They also attempted to land superstar Paul George and All-Star Lauri Markkanen in trades, but neither deal came to fruition.
Despite their lack of big moves this offseason, superstar Stephen Curry elected to sign a massive contract extension with the Warriors. It’s now up to Golden State to prove to Curry they’re capable of winning in the waning years of his career.
