REMINDER: The Bears take on the Giants on Sunday at 1 p.m. Combined with the sellout Aaron Judge Home Run Watch crowd for the 1:30 p.m. Yanks/Orioles game, this will lead to extra traffic on the Hudson River crossings especially as both games are likely to end between 4 and 5 p.m. The George Washington Bridge will be hardest hit. Use the New Jersey Transit rail shuttle to the Meadowlands as an alternative for Big Blue; the subway or Metro-North is your best bet to The Stadium.

Yom Kippur, the holiest of days for Jews, takes place from sundown Tuesday to sundown Wednesday. Expect extra activity in Williamsburg, Crown Heights, Borough Park, Forest Hills, Riverdale and by synagogues city-wide.

It seems like every sport is coming back at once! This week, it’s basketball. The NBA preseason kicks off with the 76ers playing the Nets, Monday at 7:30 p.m. at Barclays. The Heat take on the Nets Thursday at 7:30 p.m. Over at Madison Square Garden, the Knicks host the Pistons Tuesday at 7 p.m., and the Pacers Friday at 7:30 p.m.
The NHL preseason continues as the Bruins face the Rangers at Madison Square Garden, Wednesday at 7 p.m.
But, we can’t forget the Mets as they close out the season at Citi Field with games vs. Washington at 7 p.m. Monday and Tuesday and 4 p.m. Wednesday. Big crowds expected for this crucial series with First Place on the line.

First, on air shuttles: it is an indictment of the state of rail travel in this country that anyone flies from New York City to D.C., Boston, the Cape, the Hamptons, or other nearby destinations. They’re terrible for the climate. France actually banned certain short-haul domestic flights this year for that reason, which it could do because train service there offers a fast and frequent alternative. We need to get working on true high-speed rail for the Northeast Corridor. On Long Island, which sees a traffic nightmare every summer, it’s well past time for the LIRR to run more trains to the East End.
As for helicopters, I don’t think tourists and ultra-wealthy travelers should take precedence over the rest of us. Science is learning more every day about how awful noise pollution is for human health. Choppers are big air polluters too. I support efforts to limit helicopter use to essential services and, of course, traffic reporting.
