The Sharks on Sunday traded defenseman Jaycob Megna to the Seattle Kraken for a 2023 fourth-round draft pick.
The Kraken held two fourth-round draft picks for this year, with the second one acquired on July 27, 2021, from the Colorado Avalanche for defenseman Kurtis MacDermid. Per the terms of the trade with the Sharks, the Kraken will need to decide by June 15 — less than two weeks before the start of the NHL draft — which one of the two fourth-rounder picks they will send to San Jose.
The Sharks now have 10 picks in this year’s draft, including two each in the fourth, fifth, and seventh rounds.
Sunday’s trade is the Sharks’ second in nine days, as they sent forward Matt Nieto and defenseman Ryan Merkley to the Colorado Avalanche for defenseman/forward Jacob MacDonald and forward Martin Kaut on Jan. 25.
Megna, 30, played in 48 games for the Sharks this season, mainly alongside Erik Karlsson, and had one goal, 11 assists, and 21 penalty minutes. He played in his 100th NHL game on Nov. 10 at St. Louis and scored his first goal of the season on Jan. 10 at Arizona.
Megna played in 92 games for San Jose across parts of two seasons, registering 20 points (three goals, 17 assists). Megna served as team captain of the San Jose Barracuda (AHL) during the 2020-21 and 2021-22 seasons.
The six-foot-six, 220-pound native of Plantation, Florida was signed by San Jose as an unrestricted free agent on July 28, 2021.
