(Newser) – Jeff Bezos doesn’t own an NFL team, but that could change. One day after the current owner of the Washington Commanders retained Bank of America to look into a sale, Bezos is preparing a bid for the team with Jay-Z, the Financial Times reports. The Amazon founder reportedly is prepared to pay more than $5.5 billion. Dan Snyder has been under pressure to sell the team after allegations of sexual harassment and financial misconduct, per CNBC. He’s under investigation by federal prosecutors, the House Oversight Committee, and the NFL.
Bezos could be competing against Josh Harris, a billionaire private equity executive, and Byron Allen, a media mogul. Rapper and producer Jay-Z has dabbled in sports ownership before, once owning a piece of the NBA’s Brooklyn Nets. The NFL fined Snyder’s team $10 million last year after its investigation of abusive workplace allegations, and he relinquished running day-to-day operations of the Commanders to his wife, Tanya.
