The NFL’s owners held their annual fall meeting on Tuesday and headlines were dominated by what Colts’ owner Jim Irsay had to say about Dan Snyder of the Washington Commanders.
That wasn’t the only major event to happen throughout the day. According to a report from ESPN, Cowboys’ owner Jerry Jones had a ‘heated exchange’ with New England’s Robert Kraft over contract negotiations for league commissioner Roger Goodell.
The report stated that the NFL’s owners voted 31-1 to allow the compensation committee to open negotiations for a new Goodell contract. Jones was the only owner at odds:
The sources said Kraft joined the overwhelming majority in strong support for the measure, with Jones the lone dissenter in the owners-only session, eventually telling Kraft, “Don’t f— with me.”
Kraft replied, “Excuse me?”
“Don’t mess with me,” Jones said.
Jones has disagreed with extension talks for Goodell in the past, working to derail the five-year deal signed by the commissioner in 2017. The compensation committee worked hard to ensure the deal was in place before Jones and the rest of the league’s owners convened for their winter in Irving that year.
Jones was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2017, but saw his reputation take a hit after the long crusade against Goodell.
The Cowboys’ owner had a radio appearance on 105.3 The Fan [KRLD-FM] on Tuesday, where he gave little information on possible Snyder talks in this year’s fall meeting.
“I’m just saying, that I don’t think it’s gonna have much time as we visit about this meeting,” Jones said. “Secondly, I think it’s between the media and the politics, the outside. I’m talking the outside media, outside politics, those kinds of things.
“I know of — no issues that I have knowledge of. No, I don’t think that would be a highlighted item today.”
