Jerseys aren’t just clothes; they are relics, and they tell a story. And now, 2 Rookie jerseys have been taken up for auction. The legendary Bulls #23 and Lakers #8 were up for grabs. Michael Jordan‘s game memorabilia has never disappointed in its sale expectations. His Airness’ autographed card sold for an eye-watering $2.7 million. A jersey that was expected to fetch $5 million soared past that mark to achieve double. It might not be wrong to say that any rare collection from MJ’s career is as enticing to avid collectors as it is to auction houses.
However, despite being sold for millions, a rare gem from MJ’s rookie career shockingly didn’t keep up with its sky-high expectations, as collectors expect Kobe Bryant‘s rare jersey in April. Could The Last Dance have saved it?
A whopping $10.1 million. That was the price for the 6x NBA champ’s Game 1 jersey from the 1998 NBA Finals. Expectations around the Chicago Bulls legend’s memorabilia are always high. Not to mention that the sports documentary heavily added to the hype of the jersey. So, it was understandable why a rarely seen jersey from Jordan’s rookie years was expected to sell for $10 million.

The auction house called this piece from the 1980s as rare as a “unicorn.” The company MeiGray, which authenticates sports memorabilia, had examined nearly 130 pieces claimed to have belonged to the 10-time NBA scoring champion. However, only four were authenticated, and this was one of them. But, dashing all hopes, the signed jersey achieved $4.215 million.
Despite its failure to meet expectations, this is still the fifth most expensive jersey ever sold. Two of the first four also include other Jordan jerseys, one of which was mentioned before. The newly sold jersey is very special, considering its history.

As per the auction house, this jersey was worn by multiple players. A dark stain below the number 23 suggests that other numbers were emblazoned on it. This was said to be because the Chicago Bulls‘ financial condition wasn’t good in the 80s. As mentioned before, there’s another special jersey from Kobe Bryant’s career that is up for auction.
While Jordan’s rookie jersey fell short of the astronomical $10 million mark, its $4.215 million sale still cements its place among basketball’s most prized possessions. The narrative woven into its fabric—a relic of the Bulls’ leaner years, a proof of the humble beginnings of a legend—added a layer of historical significance that resonated with collectors. Yet, even as Jordan’s legacy continues to command millions, the spotlight now shifts to another iconic figure, another legendary number 8, whose rookie jersey is set to test the limits of basketball memorabilia valuation.

Kobe Bryant’s jersey is expected to sell for $10 million
Both jerseys were brought to the TNT studio to allow a first glimpse before the lucky collector acquired it. Bryant’s jersey is also a rare piece from his debut year with the Los Angeles Lakers. The number 8 emblazoned on the jersey was photo-matched to photos from his first NBA Media Day, his preseason debut in October 1996, and his regular-season debut in November. It is truly a one-of-a-kind piece.
“This jersey is a tangible connection to the early stages of Bryant’s career, which would culminate in five NBA championships, two Finals MVP awards, and an iconic legacy as one of the greatest players in basketball history,” auction house Sotheby’s said. The anticipation surrounding Kobe Bryant’s rookie jersey auction is palpable. Back in 2023, Bryant’s autographed jersey from his 2007-2008 MVP season sold for $5.8 million.

Will it shatter expectations, eclipsing even Jordan’s monumental sales? Or will it, too, face the unpredictable winds of the auction world? Regardless of the final price, one fact remains: these jerseys are more than just fabric and numbers; they are tangible pieces of basketball history, relics that capture the essence of greatness and the enduring passion of fans who seek to own a piece of that magic.
In the high-stakes world of sports memorabilia, where legends are immortalized in thread and ink, the battle for supremacy continues, with each auction setting a new benchmark for the value of basketball’s most cherished treasures.
