Bettors should wait and see before backing local teams
As expected, both New York teams have opened among the top-five favorites to win the 2023 World Series. The Bronx Bombers are currently the fourth team on the oddsboard behind the Dodgers (+500), Astros (+600) and Braves (+800), while the Mets are the fifth choice at +1000.
And it makes sense that the two New York teams are basically being offered at the same price because they have very similar offseason dilemmas coming up. While the Yankees will need to do everything in their power to keep Aaron Judge in the Bronx, the Mets will have a similar song and dance to play with Jacob deGrom.
Not only are both Judge and deGrom among the best 10 players in the Major Leagues, but they also are vitally important to the identity of each club. The Yankees have built their roster around big bats in the heart of the order, while the Mets had one of the game’s best starting rotations last season. It’s obvious to point out, but losing Judge and/or deGrom would have a significant impact, not just in terms of the talent on the roster but also on how these teams build their entire
With the Dodgers as the consensus favorite, the Astros coming off a World Series title, and the Braves looking every bit a beast, it’s hard to imagine the price on the Yankees or Mets will shorten much, even if they re-sign their stars. That means bettors interested in backing one of the local squads can afford to be patient and see where the chips fall this winter.

The White Sox are a good buy-low team
One of the stories of last year’s offseason market was that money came pouring in on the Chicago White Sox, who went into Opening Day at +1200, basically putting them in the same range as the Yankees, Mets, and Braves. The season didn’t go as planned on the South Side of Illinois, however, and now the White Sox have drifted to +3000 ahead of the winter.
But there is reason to expect the White Sox to bounce back after an 81-81 season. For one, the team should be healthier. The Southsiders were hit hard by injuries as Tim Anderson, Eloy Jimenez and Luis Robert all missed significant time. Yoan Moncada and Yasmani Grandal also dealt with some health issues, though neither player performed to expectations, either.
If Robert (who was a popular MVP bet last winter), Jimenez, and Anderson stay healthy and the team can get Moncada back on track, they can contend in the AL Central, which should be pretty soft in 2023.
