Joey Logano has described the “coolest moment” of his career after he claimed the 2022 NASCAR championship after winning the Cup Series season finale in Phoenix.
The 32-year-old driver with Team Penske bagged his second NASCAR championship over the weekend, capping off a stellar season for owner Roger Penske, who also won a 17th IndyCar title in September, with Will Power as the driver.
Speaking on Let’s Go! with Tom Brady, Larry Fitzgerald and Jim Gray, Joey said that his win was made all the more special because he did it in front of his 4-year-old son Hudson.
Joey, who also shares a boy named Jameson Jett and daughter Emilia Love, with wife Brittany, told the podcast that having Hudson there made for some special memories, making the win even sweeter.
On the podcast, Fitzgerald asked Logano about the moment that his son joined him after he had secured the race win.
Fitzgerald said: “Joey, your 4-year-old son, it is going to be a memorable scene not only for the both of you but for everybody in NASCAR and the fans when you got out and walked with you holding your hand after the race and it is something that you guys had talked about.
“Give us a little background to that story as it was such a great, cute moment at the end of the race.”
Logano replied: “That was one of the coolest moments for me. We have three kids. Hudson was able to come along. Our others are younger and trying to travel with the time change, we said we’d see them when we got home.
“Hudson is old enough to come along. He’s a car driver, straight off the bat, he’s following in dad’s footsteps when it comes to loving cars. This is his thing, which outrides even more than racing cars, which is okay with me.”
Logano went on to describe some of their on-track antics and how much his son enjoyed the moments.
He continued: “So, we always do donuts together at home in the parking lot. Doing it on the racetrack was much better in a race car.
“He ran up and grabbed the flag at the start/finish line, he got the checkered flag and jumped into the passenger seat.
“He’s funny because he’s 4 and gets shy around other people but that morning, when he was up and we were hanging out and talking about it and his emotions were ‘yeah, we blowed the tires off them dad.'”
Logano went on to say that this was a moment that he had dreamed about, so he was glad to have finally made this come true.
He continued: “To hear his expressions and what he thought of the day and how special that was.
“I had always had the dream of doing that. Kevin Hardy did it a few years back with his son at Michigan and every time we won we haven’t had my kids there, I don’t know how that’s been happening but finally won one with them there.”
Fitzgerald said that he was there at the time and had a moment where he was in the pit car with his son, ahead of the race drivers, and that was a big moment for them.
Fitzgerald shared: “I got to ride in the pits car with my son at to look back in the mirror and see his face and I told him while we were driving, ‘son, look behind you, the greatest driver in the world is right behind us and he looked back and shoot a little video and it was a special moment.
“There’s nothing like sharing those special moments with your children and when you look back years from now and you think about those memories that you hold dear to your heart.”
Gray ribbed Fitzgerald and asked Logano: “Did you have any road rage when you had Larry there in front of you? Like, what is this guy doing?”
Logano admitted that he didn’t really take in who was in front of him at that time.
He said: “If I’m being honest, I never saw you, I don’t know how I didn’t see you but there were people all over the place. It was so busy, just a sea of people and you are kinda zoned in.”
