Jeff Gordon is inarguably the one name that sits permanently in most top-five NASCAR drivers of all-time lists. The four-time Cup Series champion not only has an insane record on track, but his contributions to the sport are also quite valuable.

But despite that, there’s one NASCAR insider who doesn’t consider the Hendrick Motorsports man as an all-timer, spotter Brett Griffin.

In a recent answer to a question, Couch Racers and further Griffin himself emphasized, that Gordon isn’t in the list of top five drivers he has seen in his lifetime.
The list included, “Earnhardt, Johnson, Stewart, Larson, Mark Martin.”
Naturally, this led to plenty of NASCAR fans making a point in the favor of Jeff Gordon, but Griffin’s reasons to exclude him were far from opinion base. Rather, they were experience based.
“Gordon cost me a chance at a championship with the Bs he pulled at Phoenix,” he revealed.

Without a doubt, the turning point for current Hendrick Motorsports ace Chase Elliott in the championship race in Phoenix was when he got spun around after contact with another championship hopeful, Ross Chastain.
Speaking about this incident, the former HMS ace, Jeff Gordon described how Elliott was feeling about what happened, a question that the #9 driver chose to ignore in a post-race interview.

“I love the way Chase Elliott races, a lot of integrity, earns a lot of respect with his competitors,” Gordon said. “It’s just frustrating him because he doesn’t feel like he gets raced the same way in return.”

The four-time Cup champion described he’s proud of his driver and the #9 HMS team for putting in “a heck of a year,” as he claimed they gave the eventual champions, Joey Logano and Team Penske “a run for” their money in the championship battle.
