Very soon we’ll hear the 670 horsepower V8s roar to life once again, announcing the drivers’ and teams’ unwavering resolve as they prepare for the ultimate clash of speed and ability. And this time, it won’t just be at any race! It’ll be at the Daytona 500, one of the richest sporting events in all of stock car racing. The 2023 Daytona 500 purse was the largest in NASCAR history at $26,934,357. This means the race winner can get as much as $1.5 – $2 million as the prize. The driver in question is Brennan Poole and he has had a couple of outings at the 2.5-mile superspeedway before. His best result came when he was driving for Chip Ganassi Racing in 2017, in the Xfinity Series. Knowing the importance of a good qualifying session even then, the driver started the race from pole. However, as the chequered flag flew, he found himself in 7th place. If we talk about his one participation in the main event, Daytona 5oo, he finished the race in 16th with Premium Motorsports, starting from a lowly 34th place. Safe to say the guy knows a thing or two about the pressure associated with such crown-jewel events.
Talking to Eric Estepp on one of his latest YouTube videos, Poole, who is starting at a new Xfinity team, Alpha Prime Racing, this year, said, “I think there’s a lot of teams and a lot of people that are going to be trying to do everything that they can to make sure that they’re in this race not only is it our highest paying race which can make you know a lot of the smaller teams and teams in the middle kind of make their year financially.”
While Poole explained it from more of an ‘Xfinity’ standpoint, we can only imagine how things get tougher when it is the top-tier series that we are talking about.

Cracking the Daytona 500 Qualifying Code
Unlike regular races, Daytona 500 qualifying takes place throughout a single weekend. The top 20 drivers from the prior year earn slots in the qualifying order, which is decided by a random draw. To earn the coveted front-row start, each driver completes one thrilling lap around the tri-oval. For Sunday’s main event, the top two qualifiers will start at the front of the field, with the remaining starting positions determined by the Duel races.
Chartered teams, who are dedicated to competing in all of the NASCAR Cup races, are assured guaranteed spots in the Daytona 500 field. This guarantee puts more pressure on open teams that compete for a few remaining positions. Drivers from every team use practice sessions to hone their race plans and maximize their performance for NASCAR’s first championship race. For drivers and teams, these practice sessions offer priceless chances to perfect setups, test various race scenarios, and fix any problems that may arise during qualifying and the Duels.
