Philadelphia Union coach Jim Curtin was named Major League Soccer’s 2022 Coach of the Year, the league announced Tuesday. Curtain also won the award in 2020.
Curtin won the vote by just a 0.1 percent margin, receiving 23.57 percent of the overall vote by MLS club technical staff, media and current players. CF Montreal’s Wilfried Nancy was second and notably garnered 43.9 percent of the media vote to Curtin’s 17.9 percent. Curtin got 23 percent of player votes and 29.8 percent from team staff, whereas Nancy had 9.5 percent from players and 17 percent from team staff.

LAFC’s Steve Cherundolo was a distant third with 14.57 percent of the overall vote.
Curtin, in his ninth season with the club, led Philadelphia to a team single-season points record (67) as it took the top spot in the Eastern Conference for the second time in the last three seasons. The Union also set club records for goals scored (72) and fewest goals conceded (26) in a season.
Philadelphia plays NYCFC on Sunday in the Eastern Conference final. Montreal, meanwhile, lost to NYCFC last Sunday in the semifinals.
At 43, Curtin becomes the youngest two-time winner of the award, the league said. He’s the fifth coach to win it multiple times.
