Some Knicks faithful weren’t happy with Spike Lee’s decision to attend the 2025 Met Gala instead of supporting the team at Game 1 of their second-round playoff series in Boston on Monday.
Lee, who is a die-hard Knicks fan, did pay homage to the team by sporting a custom blue and orange hat with the team’s logo on it while on the red carpet in New York.
The famed filmmaker was roasted online and got called out for not being a true supporter of the team.
“He went to the Met Gala? Come on man you can’t be super fan for everything from St. John’s to the Liberty and then skip game 1 against the Celtics to get photographed w a bunch of a–holes,” one person wrote on X, referring to Lee attending the Liberty’s playoff games last fall and then supporting the St. John’s men’s basketball team during the Big East Tournament and March Madness.

“Spike Lee blowing off the Knicks game for the Met Gala is his second worst move ever after taunting Reggie Miller,” Sports Illustrated’s Jimmy Traina wrote, referring to Lee’s infamous taunting of the former NBA star during Game 5 of the 1994 Eastern Conference finals between the Knicks and Pacers.
Lee attended the 2025 Met Gala with his wife, Tonya Lewis Lee, and the couple posed for photos together at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute in Manhattan.
As Lee was rubbing elbows with fellow stars at fashion’s biggest night, his beloved Knicks took a 1-0 series lead in their conference semifinal matchup with the Celtics.

The Knicks rallied back from a 20-point deficit to steal Game 1 in overtime, 108-105, at TD Garden behind strong offensive performances from Jalen Brunson and OG Anunoby, who each scored 29 points.
Karl-Anthony Towns added 14 points and 13 rebounds.
Boston had a horrible shooting night, missing an NBA playoff-record 45 3-pointers.

Some Knicks fans said Lee should stay home for Game 2 in Boston on Wednesday night after their victory in Game 1.
“After that finish he can’t go to next game either for risk of jinxing them,” another added.

It’s unclear if Lee, who is a courtside staple at Madison Square Garden, plans to attend Game 2.
