‘They Will Boo One and Cheer for the Other’- Stan Wawrinka Fires Back at Tennis Australia’s Boss’ Bias Towards Novak Djokovic

Even though the season’s first Grand Slam event is about to begin, there have been numerous controversies surrounding it up to this point. The Australian Open organizers have warned fans not to boo Novak Djokovic who was previously deported from the country. They have warned them for throwing them out if they try to target the 21-time singles Grand Slam champion. However, tennis player Stan Wawrinka did not seem happy with this decision.
There are a few in the tennis community who were not impressed with the protocol set up by the authorities in Melbourne. The Swiss tennis player is among those who fired back at the Australian Open organizers for threatening fans to not boo Djokovic. He further claimed that the fans should be allowed to boo the Serbian tennis player because “that’s tennis”.

The Swiss tennis player told the Herald Sun that he wasn’t impressed with the Australian Open organizers’ protocol of restricting fans from booing Novak Djokovic. Stan Wawrinka said that if the fans go over the limit then only they should be stopped from expressing their contempt for the Serbian tennis player. However, Wawrinka also said that he thinks the supporters should be allowed to do whatever they want.

He added, “They do it every year with every player – if they don’t like the player, or they like another one, they will boo one and cheer for the other one. That’s tennis. That’s sport. That’s what you want.”

Wawrinka went on to talk about the deportation faced by Djokovic in the previous season. He further said that he thinks “there was many mistakes – not only Novak.” Later on, the former Australian Open champion also said that he believe the fans will not boo him. Wawrinka added that the supporters would be happy to see Djokovic at the Grand Slam event. He went on to say that it’s going to be a great tournament in Melbourne.

Andy Murray also commented on the matter
The British tennis star said that he doesn’t necessarily like seeing players get booed during their matches. Andy Murray went on to say that it’s not nice for players when they get condemned by the fans. Later on, he talked about the support that Djokovic got during his matches in Adelaide.
Murray said that Djokovic got great support from the fans during that event. He added that it’ll probably be the same when the Serbian will play at the Australian Open.
