She’s been around the NBA for a long time now, first for her ex-husband Dell Curry, and now for her sons Steph and Seth.
But things haven’t been simple for Mama Curry. Especially with her 33 years of marriage coming crashing down in 2021. It must have been difficult, but how much, only Sonya Curry can share. Recently, Stephen Curry’s proud mom shared intimate details about her marriage, divorce, and spiritual journey. Meanwhile, Curry Sr. moved on and remarried two years after their divorce. Well, the conversation about her divorce with Dell Curry requires a little context. So, back in 2021, Stephen Curry’s parents announced they were getting a divorce, and of course, it turned into a high-profile story.
Their separation became public amidst ‘infidelity’ blame games. Dell accused his wife of being involved with an ex-NFL player and Sonya fired back at her husband on grounds of “marital misconduct.” Since Steph Curry’s family dynamics have been so widely spoken about in the NBA community, such incidents made things difficult for the family. Also, it simply meant that we’d not see Sonya and Dell together in the same crowd cheering for their sons.

“I was going through the Bible, and … I’m Eve. The one who knew better but wanted to know more. I’m Sarah, who God said, you’re gonna have a child. And I was like, I’m gonna make this happen now,” Sonya Curry expressed. It’s easy to understand that her emotional experience during the ‘public’ trials and divorce must have been gutwrenching. No wonder, when she reminisced about the moments, her voice shook with pain.
Even for Steph, his parents’ going their separate ways was a shock. He remembered how his parents wore custom-made jerseys during the playoffs, to support their sons. But, sometimes, some things need to be handled with a lot of care. And that’s what Stephen Curry did.

In 2022, the Warriors star told The Ringer: “It’s challenging for sure. I could be mad and be like, ‘Y’all effed this up.’ I could have that approach. But it’s going to be an acknowledgment of both of y’all in terms of how y’all raised me. The calmness I have in myself is because of y’all…I had to make sure I was in that moment with both of them separately and this wasn’t just this whole kind of thing. That is how I choose to approach that. Because it is challenging.”
