From an unfortunate blunder at the US Open to missing the cut at the Open Championship, it’s hard to say how Rory McIlroy feels about this season. The PGA Tour’s season is over with the FedEx Cup and unfortunately, he wasn’t able to claim the PGA Tour Champion title. But, were the FedEx Cup playoffs the Irishman’s last appearance on the greens for this season? No!
He will play at the BMW PGA Championship on the DP World tour. The tournament will commence from September 17th to 22nd at the Wentworth Club, Virginia Water. Back in March this year, BMW PGA shared a post on Instagram confirming this news captioning “CONFIRMED: Returning to the #BMWPGA and seeking another title, in 2024!”
Last year the golfer played at the tournament alongside pros like Jon Rahm, Viktor Hovland, and others and finished 9th. Rory McIlroy has won the BMW PGA Championship only once, back in 2014, this year he will be trying to claim the title for the second time.

In the FedEx Cup playoffs, McIlroy started with a T68 finish at the FedEx St. Jude Championship and bounced with a T11 at the BMW Championship. He surely was looking strong to win the Tour Championship and earn a hefty bonus of $25 million but couldn’t. Instead, he finished T9 at the East Lake and settled for a payout of $1,608,333.

The pros will compete in a standard 72-hole format at the BMW PGA Championship as defending champion Ryan Fox will aim to retain his title. Last year’s prize purse was $9.9 million, a $1 million increase from 2022. However, this year’s final purse for the tournament has not been announced yet. While McIlroy’s season-ending tournament ended on a sour note, how did his overall 2024 season go? We’d say, average.
Taking a look at Rory McIlroy’s whole 2024 season
The 2024 season was a roller coaster for the Northern Irishman. He started roughly this year with a T66 at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, however, things started to improve from the Genesis Invitational as he tied at Riviera for the 24th position. Interestingly, from there, the 4x major winner went on to a top-25 finish at the next five tournaments including the Masters, with the third position at the Valero Texas Open being the best. However, Rory McIlroy’s ride went a little bit downhill at RBC Heritage as he finished T33, but it was only to gain the momentum back again.

Just after the RBC Heritage, McIlroy claimed back-to-back PGA Tour wins at the Zurich Classic and the Wells Fargo Championship. He won the Wells Fargo Championship for the fourth time in his career, becoming the only pro to do so. He carried the form to the PGA Championship finishing tying for 12th. He was hoping to use the same momentum at the US Open, and he did come close. However, an unfortunate bogey on the 18th hole made all the difference and he couldn’t claim his fifth major victory, missing it by just 1 stroke. At the Open Championship at Royal Troon, McIlroy missed the cut and then finished T5 at the Olympics at Le Golf National while representing Ireland in green.
