There are just too many things going on with the Dallas Cowboys. Mike McCarthy was on the hot seat, but things changed after he and the Cowboys won against the Washington Commanders. The America’s team owner pulled a classic Jerry Jones after claiming that McCarthy was an “outstanding” coach and didn’t dismiss the possibility of signing him.
But there’s a notion going around that the billionaire not willing to let go of the Super Bowl winning coach is because of an ulterior motive. The rumor mill is working overtime, dishing out the narrative that either Bill Belichick or Deion Sanders might be the next head coaches of the Dallas team. But Chris Broussard of the First Things First laid those half-baked claims to rest. He has a good reason too.
It’s no mystery that Jones loves publicity and is no less of a Hollywood character himself. And that’s the exact reason why he might not hire someone as flashy as Deion Sanders, or a stern coach like the 6x Super Bowl winner, Bill Belichick. Before we get into the “why’s,” let’s check out what Broussard had to say about the situation.

“With Belichick and Deion, they, even Belichick, they become the face of the franchise. Like Belichick won’t talk like Deion and be as charismatic, but he’s Bill Belichick. He’s got 6 rings, he’ll be the face of the franchise. Deion obviously will be the face of the franchise. I don’t know that Jerry Jones wants that, so…” Broussard said on First Things First.
Starting with Belichick, he oversaw everything for the Patriots in his tenure there. Not only did he serve as their head coach for 24 years, but he was also the de-facto GM of the most storied franchise in the NFL. From scouting, to hiring and firing, to play calling, Belichick did everything. And it’s obvious that the former Pats coach is the type who doesn’t like to cede any control.
Deion Sanders on the other hand, has been a well-known figure in the Cowboys history. He won the Super Bowl XXX with them after all. But the thing is, if Sanders does become the Cowboys coach, he’s going to come in with his sons and it’s going to be a package deal, but that’s not the most concerning thing here.
You see, when Coach Prime took the job at Colorado, he cut 20 people in a single day. Additionally, 22 players landed at Group of Five program, 15 at Power Five and 11 at FCS or Division II. Though he might not make as many changes to the Cowboys roster, but there’s a possibility that he might make the situation more dramatic.
Jerry Jones might not be ready for that sort of action, not on his watch. So, is that the reason why he’s still sticking with McCarthy? Let’s check out what he had to say on his recent radio appearance.

McCarthy has had three consecutive 12-5 campaigns with the Dallas Cowboys and that paired with his Super Bowl win with the Green Bay Packers has led Jerry Jones to explore the possibility of further signing him. In fact, the Cowboys owner doesn’t think that it would be a crazy idea. He took to 105.3 The Fan and shook the Dallas fan base with his comments.

“I don’t think that’s crazy at all. That’s not crazy. Listen, Mike McCarthy is an outstanding coach… This is a Super Bowl-winning coach. Mike McCarthy has been there, done that. He’s got great ideas,” Jones said about McCarthy. But everyone should have known better. It wouldn’t be long before Mike McCarthy’s reaction to the owner’s comment came to limelight.
The head coach didn’t want to make it seem like he was excited to hear those words coming from Jones. He downplayed the idea of signing for another season with the Cowboys saying he was focused on the next game at hand. The Dallas team is playing the New York Giants next and the head coach is solely focused on winning over the divisional rivals.

“Crazy? I mean… I really haven’t talked about it all year, so I’m definitely not going to start on a short week and an important division game. But I’m not going to throw away positive vibes either, so keep ’em coming. That’s all good. But, yeah, that’s not something I’m really focused on,” the Dallas head coach said in the press conference on 11/28.
With all this said, let’s be considerate of the fact that Dak Prescott is out of the season and with that, the Cowboys are just dilly-dallying through the season. Yes, the win against the Commanders feels great, but at the same time, unless the Cowboys beat a team like the Chiefs or the Eagles, it would be hard to place trust in the roster. Maybe Jerry Jones has considered all this and is willing to give McCarthy another shot.
